Our pelvic floor muscles are the bottom portion of our core muscle system. These muscles work together with your hip, abdominal and back muscles to create stability through our body with activity. When any of the core muscles are weakened or challenged due to certain conditions, we may suffer from pain or weakness with function. Specifically, the pelvic floor muscles are responsible for the function of our bladder and bowels as well as maintaining the appropriate posture for our everyday life. Unfortunately, when we deal with issues such as cancer, surgery or changes in our hormones, our bladder and bowel function may be impacted. In addition, our pelvic floor muscles may be weakened or become tight. It is important for everyone to understand the role of their pelvic floor muscles.
